Differents types of pruning and trimming

Trees play an essential role in preserving the balance of nature and the survival of humanity. They purify the air, attract rain, filter water, stabilize soils and provide shelter for animals. We also appreciate their beauty, their nobility and the particularities of each one.

The deciduous and coniferous trees we live with need regular care for different reasons, whether to protect their constitution, to enhance their aesthetics or to prevent accidents. One way to take care of our large plants is to prune them, either by pruning or pruning.

Many people confuse these two terms or think they are interchangeable, which is not the case. This page will shed light on the differences between the two. Let's start by defining these words.

Differents types of trimming

Wikipedia describes this practice like this:

Pruning is an operation that consists of cutting down certain dead or living branches.

Thus, it is a question of pruning, shortening or removing branches according to certain objectives while doing what is necessary to preserve the health of the tree. For example, your intention may be to promote a tree's growth, restore its health, encourage its fruit production or improve its appearance and appearance. You may also be concerned because a tree is growing near your home and is becoming a danger to it. Pruning has many advantages, but you must have a valid reason for doing it.

Differents types of trimming

The vast majority of the time, professionals in the arboricultural field use the word pruning to designate the action of cutting off the top of a tree, or in other words, topping it. This practice generally aims to preserve infrastructures and protect the safety of people.

Pruning can also refer to the act of cutting all the branches of a tree, from a certain height and down to the ground. This technique can be used to remove dry or damaged branches, as well as to clear the space at the base of the tree (to allow the mower to pass more easily or to create a relaxation area, for example).

No matter what pruning technique is used, it is harmful to the tree. For this reason, pruning or guying should be strongly considered first and pruning should be an option of last resort, in certain circumstances only.

Following this drastic cut, the tree will grow at an accelerated rate and will need pruning later. It is also important to know that pruning shortens the life of the tree. The choice to use this method should therefore not be taken lightly.

Do you have to be trained to prune a tree?

At first glance, pruning may seem accessible enough to put it into practice yourself. This is not the case! Only an experienced team is qualified to apply the techniques safely, effectively and beneficially.

A professional arborist doesn't just happen. He or she studies the tree carefully to determine the appropriate pruning to ensure that the tree evolves optimally. Although this analysis step may seem superfluous to a neophyte, it is nevertheless necessary to avoid irreversible damage to the tree's vitality due to a cutting error. You should also know that a certified pruner has the equipment required to work at height, while respecting certain safety principles.

Don't risk your own well-being or that of your precious trees by improvising your pruning from one day to the next. Leave the task to a professional, who has the knowledge and experience to advise you on the most appropriate maintenance for your needs and those of your large plants. Types of pruning

There are several pruning techniques available, each with specific objectives. They can be used to solidify the structure of a tree, to improve its aesthetics, to preserve safety, etc.

Sanitation pruning

Consists of removing up to 1/5 of the twig of a tree, for example to fortify it. This method is also used to remove a section of the tree that represents a danger to people or material goods (electrical wires, building, car or other).

Thinning pruning

Consists of pruning broken, dry or diseased branches first, with the main aim of lightening the density of the branch. This technique is then used to increase sunlight in certain areas chosen by the owners, such as the garden or swimming pool.
